Mwanza is ready: Building Resilience against Internet Shutdowns

On December 17 and 18, 2024, Reach Out Tanzania (ROT) hosted a vital two-day training session in Mwanza, aimed at empowering 15 civil society organizations (CSOs) and human rights defenders. This initiative was designed to equip participants with essential skills to navigate and overcome internet restrictions and disruptions, a pressing concern as the country approaches the 2025 general elections.

The training took place at Aden City Hotel in Mwanza, fostering a collaborative environment where participants could reflect on the challenges posed by internet shutdowns. Drawing lessons from the significant disruptions experienced during the 2020 general elections, ROT recognized the urgent need for preparation. The past experiences highlighted how vital internet connectivity is for the effective operation of CSOs and the protection of human rights. With these insights, the training was structured to ensure that Mwanza's activists are not only prepared but also resilient in the face of potential future challenges.

During the two days of intensive training, participants engaged in discussions sharing their personal experiences with internet shutdowns and the impact these disruptions have on their work. They also participated in hands-on exercises designed to familiarize them with various circumvention tools that can be employed to bypass restrictions. By learning such tactics, the participants increased their capacity to maintain effective communication and promote their missions, even during periods of internet disruption.

By the end of the training, participants were energized and motivated. They gained new strategies to measure the impact of internet shutdowns, stay connected with stakeholders, and advocate for human rights, even in challenging situations. ROT’s commitment to empowering human rights defenders was evident, reinforcing their goal of strengthening community stability in Tanzania.

This training in Mwanza marks a significant step forward in the critical mission to foster resilience and defend digital rights. As Tanzania gears up for its upcoming elections, the skills acquired by these civil society organizations and human rights defenders will play a crucial role in safeguarding the democratic processes in the region.

Through this proactive approach, Reach out Tanzania continues to champion the importance of internet freedom and human rights. By empowering local organizations, ROT is not just preparing them for potential disruptions but is also reinforcing their vital role in supporting communities and promoting stability throughout Tanzania. The session in Mwanza stands as a testament to the power of knowledge and preparation in the face of adversity.
