It Has Happened Before and It Can Happen Again!!.
On May 24 and 25, Reach Out Tanzania gathered 20 participants, including Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), journalists, and human rights defenders, at the Safina Hotel in Makumbusho, Dar es Salaam. The training focused on equipping them with practical tips to handle potential internet shutdowns ahead of the upcoming elections in Tanzania. Reflecting on the challenging internet shutdowns that occurred during the 2020 elections, this training aimed to prepare participants for similar situations. These previous shutdowns hindered many human rights defenders from searching for, sharing, and spreading vital information. Therefore, the goal was to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively if such events were to happen again. Throughout the session, trainers engaged participants with hands-on activities and discussions about past internet shutdowns in Tanzania. They introduced useful tools such as OONI Probe and the TOR Browser, which help advocates detect and navigate internet disruptions. These resources can be essential in ensuring that human rights defenders can continue their critical work promoting social justice. Beyond the knowledge shared, the training aimed to boost the participants' confidence. By the end of the two-day session, attendees felt empowered and ready to confront any challenges that might arise in the future. As communication methods continue to evolve, the skills gained will help them maintain vital connections in their communities. This training reflects Reach Out Tanzania's commitment to supporting internet rights and building resilience among those working towards justice and equality. Together, we can ensure that every voice is heard, no matter the obstacles that may come our way.
