Resilience during Internet Shutdowns: Training on How to Mitigate the Impact of Internet Shutdown-ZANZIBAR
On September 23 and 24, 2024, Reach Out Tanzania held a two-day training session for civil society actors in Zanzibar. This initiative aimed to empower youth, women, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with the essential skills needed to navigate the challenges posed by internet shutdowns or censorship. In light of the internet disruptions experienced during the 2020 general elections, it became clear that many civil society organizations (CSOs) lacked the necessary knowledge to address these situations effectively.
The training brought together 15 participants from various CSOs in Zanzibar, all eager to learn and enhance their capacity to respond to potential internet restrictions. Over the course of the two days, they engaged in hands-on activities and discussions that focused on resilience-building and ensuring their ongoing ability to function as active members of society.
Attendees were introduced to a range of practical tools designed to test for internet disruptions, including OONI Probe and the TOR Browser. These tools provide participants with the ability to identify and navigate internet shutdowns, ensuring they can continue their important work as advocates for human rights and social justice.
This training is just the beginning for Reach Out Tanzania, as we are committed to extending these efforts beyond Zanzibar. By equipping CSOs with the knowledge and tools to respond effectively to internet challenges, we aim to foster a resilient civil society that can thrive in the face of adversity.
As the landscape of communication continues to evolve, the skills gained during this training will prove invaluable. Participants left empowered and confident, ready to tackle future challenges and keep the lines of communication open for their communities.
Together, we can build a resilient future where civil society continues to play a crucial role in advocating for rights, inclusion, and justice, irrespective of the challenges that may arise.
Stay tuned for more updates on our journey towards fostering a resilient and informed civil society.
