In a significant move to protect the rights of individuals during internet shutdowns, Reach Out Tanzania (ROT) recently hosted a training workshop for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Arusha. The event took place on October 11 and 12, 2024, at Point Zone Resort, bringing together advocates from various backgrounds to learn about navigating the challenges of internet disruptions.
This training followed a successful session held earlier in Zanzibar and came at a critical time, just weeks before the national local government election and a year before the general elections in October 2025. The tragic internet shutdowns during the 2020 elections severely impacted human rights defenders, making it difficult for them to seek, share, and disseminate information. Recognizing this urgent need, ROT aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to similar situations in the future.
The workshop empowered 15 participants from Arusha and its surrounding areas, including youth, women, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), by providing them with essential skills to navigate and overcome the challenges posed by internet shutdowns and censorship. Participants gained insights into the nature of internet shutdowns, their effects, and practical strategies to maintain resilience during such disruptions.
The significance of the event was underscored by the presence of Mr. Silvano from CIVICUS, who attended as a representative of the partner organization that supported the training financially. His participation reinforced the importance of these discussions and highlighted the collaborative effort to promote internet rights.
Trainers engaged participants through hands-on activities, discussing past cases of internet shutdowns in Tanzania and showcasing tools like OONI Probe and the TOR Browser. These resources empower advocates to identify and navigate internet disruptions, ensuring they can continue their vital work in promoting human rights and social justice.
The training not only provided knowledge but also inspired confidence among participants. By the end of the session, they left feeling empowered and ready to tackle future challenges. As our communication landscape evolves, these skills will be invaluable in keeping lines of communication open within their communities.
The success of this workshop reflects the ongoing efforts of Reach Out Tanzania to champion internet rights and foster resilience among those striving for justice and equality. Together, we can ensure that every voice is heard, regardless of the challenges faced.
